Story order in attribution of moral responsibility

چکیده

Abstract Discourse comprehension relies on the construction of a mental model that represents unfolding in time events described. In causal scenarios, where action one agent (the enabler) temporally precedes and enables another causer), discourse may reflect underlying event structure by describing enabler’s first then causer’s (story order) or describe (backward order). Studies literature have shown adults consider causers to be more responsible than enablers moral scenarios. Based assumption story order favors events, we conducted an experiment test prediction preference for causer over enabler should greater when are presented backward order. The participants were 42 fifth-grade children, adolescents, adults. results confirmed all three groups participants. We discuss practical implications these learning contexts, legal psychology judgments.

Causal deviance and the attribution of moral responsibility

Are current theories of moral responsibility missing a factor in the attribution of blame and praise? Four studies demonstrated that even when cause, intention, and outcome (factors generally assumed to be sufficient for the ascription of moral responsibility) are all present, blame and praise are discounted when the factors are not linked together in the usual manner (i.e., cases of ‘‘causal d...

Using Qualitative Reasoning for the Attribution of Moral Responsibility

We present a computational model, based on Attribution theory, of responsibility judgment for negative events. Our model uses Qualitative Process theory to reason over the continuous parameters involved in attribution, avoiding the need for ad-hoc assignment of quantitative values. Qualitative reasoning allows our model to infer relative amounts of responsibility for a situation in a manner tha...

Identification, situational constraint, and social cognition: studies in the attribution of moral responsibility.

In three experiments we studied lay observers' attributions of responsibility for an antisocial act (homicide). We systematically varied both the degree to which the action was coerced by external circumstances and the degree to which the actor endorsed and accepted ownership of the act, a psychological state that philosophers have termed "identification." Our findings with respect to identific...

Plenty of Blame to Go Around: A Qualitative Approach to Attribution of Moral Responsibility

We present a computational model of blame attribution. Recently Mao and Gratch, following Attribution theory, created a computational model that assigned blame to an agent for a negative occurrence. Their model made categorical judgments, and could only assign blame to a single agent. Our model extends this work, using QP theory to provide a continuous model for the parameters involved in attri...
